Find Real Food App, Part II

In my last blog, I introduced the Weston A. Price Foundation’s Find Real Food app, the online version of our Shopping Guide. The Shopping Guide and App are unique in many ways.

First, no one pays anything to get listed in the Find Real Food app. Any food listed there must conform to our stringent guidelines.  If you are looking for foods free of additives and industrial fats and oils, or animal foods that come from truly pastured animals, or dairy foods including cheese made from truly raw milk, this is your place to look.  No other food guide out there is as independent and comprehensive as the Find Real Food app.

Secondly, you can use the App on your computer—a real plus for dinosaurs like myself, who don’t use cell phones.

And finally, the App is powerful enough to include local foods as well as national brands—in the printed Shopping Guide we just did not have enough room to list foods that were only sold locally.

There are 4 great ways to start using Find Real Food app:

1)   Which foods are acceptable quality from my local grocery or health food store? (Hint: not everything at Whole Foods is acceptable. Not even close!)

Find your local store on a map, click on it once to show the name, and then click again: it will display the products and brands available there that meet the criteria for its respective food category.

Clicking on a store location brings up all WAPF vetted and approved products and brands carried there

Product you want to buy not listed? You can search for it by brand name using the handy search functionality on the main screen. If it’s not in the guide, then it’s not approved. (view our list of rejected products here and reasons).

Also handy as a reference, in case you are interested in reading ingredient labels, is the “How Foods Are Chosen” section. Available for each of the 30 food categories, it describes how foods were rated Good and Best, and what ingredients to Avoid. Super handy to have at your fingertips; as I always say, when in doubt, read the ingredients!

2)   Explore and discover new farms, brands and products (even if you are an experienced traditional diet foodie)

Find Real Food has 15,000+ products by 1,200+ farms and brands. It also features user ratings and reviews, to help guide you with what other knowledgeable consumers have experienced. You can browse by food category (there are 30 categories, such as Cheese, Fresh Meat, Soups, and Snacks), of type in what you are looking for (e.g., “pastured eggs”).

It will list brands and products, that can then be further sorted, for example, by user reviews or whether they are sold in stores or online. Keeping in mind that many of these foods are very special and may not always be available in stores nearby (how easy is it to find a high quality bone broth in your local stores?), the product and brand pages have one click buttons to link to the online store or call the farm or brand to place an order. These newly discovered, shippable foods can help supplement what can be found locally.

3)   I need an “emergency snack”, but want to still eat healthy: Which stores are nearby, and what do they have to offer?

While we should strive to eat most foods sourced from local organic farms, many times this is not possible. So what’s an acceptable food or beverage while you are out running errands or in a new part of town?

Find Real Food app includes approved products sold at grocery stores not usually known for high quality foods (like Costco, Walmart, or Starbucks), but which have been vetted to meet the same high standards.

On the mobile app, click the bottom of the main menu where it says “Locations Nearby”, and it will show a map of nearby stores. Click on a pin to see the store name, and click again to see what approved food or beverage is sold there.

4)   Which healthy food stores are available near where I am going?

If you will be traveling and like to plan ahead, the website version of Find Real Food can help (www.FindReadFoodapp.com).

Type the zip code of where you will be going into the white box on the map, and click “See What’s Nearby”. It will relocate to the zip code, and show pins for stores that carry WAPF-approved foods.

This also works if you want to help introduce friends and family to higher quality foods, and help them find what may be near them.
